When mentioning large 3d prints, we are referring to those that take about 24 hours or more. Unfortunately, if there is any unexpected incident during the printing of such large parts, which require several to a dozen hours of work, the whole print may turn out bad and may end up in the trash. So what is important when it comes to this kind of printing? Is it worth to invest in large spools of filament? What filaments are the best for large and long prints?

The experience of the printer is what matters

The first thing to keep in mind when taking on large 3d prints that require plenty of time is the operator’s experience. Operators with little or no experience will not be able to handle the printing process properly, which can take up to several hours. Many things can go wrong within such a long time – the nozzle in the printer can clog, the filament can run out, the temperature can change for a while which can cause the print to shrink in a certain spot. So as you can see, the experience of the operator plays a major role in the success of a long printing process.

How crucial is efficient equipment?

Just as important as the experience of the operator is the efficient equipment used for 3D printing. The printer must be capable of large-format printing, as only such equipment can withstand hours of continuous use. You should also remember that even a very efficient 3D printer can still destroy the printout, if the spool of filament mounted inside the printer is jammed at least for a moment and is not working properly. Therefore, you should also keep an eye on other elements, and not only on efficient equipment and experience of the operator.

Large spools of filament - why are they worth the investment?

One of the things you should pay attention to is the size of the spool of filament you choose. Bigger spools means less spool changes. When using your 3d printer for continuous work you will appreciate less downtime for changing spools. Using larger spools can minimize operator time for loading new filament and you can reload your machine with a new spool even once a week. Larger spools will allow your production to run smoother, not bothering you to plan how often to change spools in the middle of a very large print that could be difficult. Finally larger spools means less waste from the leftovers on the end of the spools.

Which filaments will work best?

You can find many different filaments on the market that you can use to print just about anything you can imagine. Each type of filament has both advantages and disadvantages. What are the features of each type of filament?
  • ABS – this is one of the most commonly used filaments. It is used to produce all kinds of plastic parts that you can find around the house. This filament needs a slightly higher printing temperature, at 225 to 260 degrees Celsius. The downside of the material is a major shrinkage when cooling down.
  • PLA – this sort of filament is widely used in industry. One of its great qualities is that it is biodegradable. Young’s modulus for this filament (which is used to test the elasticity of the print) is up to 2000MPa, which is a very good result. This filament is perfect for printing figurines.
  • PET-G – another filament. It has good strength and lower shrinkage during cooling. It is perfect for printing decorative elements. Let’s not forget about the simplicity of printing, which is higher than in the case of ABS.
  • ASA – as a filament it is really robust, it is easy to print as ABS and moreover it is suitable for outdoor use. Both the material itself and the printouts made of it are resistant to UV light and all kinds of weather conditions. When deciding to perform a particular print, it is a good idea to consider the filament that will be chosen first. This way you can be sure about the quality and purpose of the print.

The important thing is to choose spools of filament from reputable sources, which will guarantee their quality.
